The music department was one of 122 in the nation to receive the Support Music Merit Award (SMMA) for their dedication to student’s education in music.
The music department offers 17 different classes and electives including Choir, Chamber Choir, Chorale, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Guitar, Marching Band, Chamber Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra, Music Production, and AP Music Theory. Senior Alex Nguyen said he enjoys the connections he has made during his time participating in the Orchestra program.
“My favorite part is the people. I think it’s really fun to talk to them and get to know everybody and everybody is so talented,” Nguyen said.
Only three schools in Missouri received the SMMA award this year. The award is sponsored by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation and has been acknowledging schools for their commitment to music education for 25 years.
Nguyen said the success of the program could be from their active staff.
“I feel like we have a lot of really good teachers in that department. They are all really nice and are very caring towards their students,” Nguyen said.
The orchestra and band branches of the music department compete yearly in competitions across the state. Jazz band section leader senior Grant Mace said the program has been successful when it comes to competitions.
“We have a really good band and orchestra that have constantly gotten the highest scores at competitions,” Mace said.
The band and orchestra ensembles have consistently won numerous awards and accolades throughout their time. Including their jazz ensemble making the top 3 at the prestigious Jazz In the Meadows festival that took place in Chicago, IL. As well as their Concert Band, Symphonic Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble received an exemplary rating at the 2024 MSHAA Music Festival.
