Every year junior and seniors fight to win a trophy: the coveted, bedazzled, rainbow football. Typically the seniors win, but not this year, not the class of 2025.
Powderpuff is a school tradition where junior and senior female students play flag football, and whichever grade wins gets the trophy. This year was the first time a senior class hasn’t won the trophy since 2019. Given the unusual senior loss, Powderpuff has been a subject of debate for many Falcons.
Senior Aliza Carlson said the game was unfair because it was different from years prior. Due to this, the Class of 2025 got penalties for unexpected things, costing them the game.
“[The game was not fair], because last year the seniors were allowed to tie their belts and got little to no penalties for it. But this year we got a lot of penalties when we tried to tie our [flags]or do anything of the sort, and that’s probably what ended up costing us touchdowns,” Carlson said.
Center senior Raghed Hadi said seniors have the minds of the refs and juniors always get mad, and then next year, when the juniors become seniors, their anger from the previous year fuels their desire to win.
“As a junior you talk bad about [seniors] cheating. It kind of gives you that anger and drive towards them. And then when you become a senior, that’s what you’re looking forward to and you’re looking forward to seeing the juniors hate you,” Hadi said.
Junior Powderpuff coach Carson Diffley said the juniors won the game fair.
“We told our girls for a good four weeks that we were going to play fair, and play even and we were going to win the right way. We scored a touchdown and [the seniors] didn’t. The final score was 7-0 and I think we played a pretty even game,” Diffley said.
Junior Addyson Timm scored the only touchdown in the whole game, resulting in the final score.
Timm said she was thrilled when she scored the touchdown.
“I felt so happy and I felt very excited that I scored the first touchdown as a junior. I got very happy when all the girls and boys were cheering me on and happy for me,” Timm said.
To top it off, the Class of 2025 also lost Tug-of-War at the pep assembly prior to the homecoming dance.
Carlson said the loss of Tug-of-War to the sophomores and Powderpuff to the juniors has affected seniors morale.
“[The Powderpuff loss] was very disheartening, I think after that and the pep rally people were very disappointed in our class, and in our prospects for the rest of the year. It was very sad,” Carlson said.
