The Annual Summit Quad took place on Sept. 19th. Senior and co-captain Ryan Menz along with junior Rylan Brieler and sophomores Gavin Waser and Caleb Hardee, competed for the boy’s 200 yard medley relay. With a time of 1:47.86, the Summit swim team won first place against Eureka and Webster Groves and placed 3rd in the whole competition. .
Although the competition was close, the team stuck together and did not give up and instead encouraged each other which helped boost Waser’s confidence, helping with the nervousness.
”Talking to my teammates and coaches about my goals that day help[ed] because it gives me something to look forward to or [a goal to] chase,” Waser said.
Before the meet, all participants tried to get as much rest as possible and eat more protein for more energy to compete the next day. Putting in the work before important meets and consistency helped the team secure their win which was important to senior co-captain Ryan Nusser.
“[Our goal was to] just keep practicing and put in max effort as a team,” Nusser said.
With more meets coming up, sometimes the team has to choose certain ones to prioritize.
“Going into the Summit Quad I believe that the thing on everyone’s mind was our swim on Saturday at Cape just a few days earlier. Because of this I knew that I would need to keep around my new faster times and push extra into my races,” Menz said.
The competitors were harsh and everyone had to push themselves to win and although they did well, they still wished to improve.
“My good friend Isaiah was on Eureka and we raced in the 100 breaststroke. Him and this other guy at Lindbergh are really good competition for me in the 100 breaststroke just because our times are super close to one another’s. I think I held my own during that meet, although I wish I had done better,” Waser said.
In the future, the team hopes to win state and as for individual goals, some want to improve their times and some just want to continue to have fun.
“Improving is as simple as becoming faster and doing anything in my power towards that goal. Being a team captain of the swim team is a very easy job in part due to the efforts of Ryan [Nusser] and just how honest and hardworking everyone is.” Menz said.
