On Oct. 3, the girls varsity golf team placed 2nd in the Rockwood Quad tournament. Coach Samuel Haug was thrilled with the team’s performance, saying that the girls showed up and played to the best of their ability.
“I was super excited. Lafayette is arguably the best public school team in the area, if not the state. I knew we were probably gonna lose to them, but beating Marquette [was] really good and beating [Eureka is] always really good, so the girls played really well that day,” Haug said.
Haug spoke on two players specifically, senior Madison Hall and freshman Abigail Bell, complementing the both of them on their skillful execution plus their ambitious take down of Eureka’s team.
“Madison Hall and Abigail Bell played [Eureka’s] number one and number two. They were very competitive with them and they beat them very handily,” Haug said.
Placing 2nd was also an exhilarating experience for the team. Hall said it was an elating moment, being that it was the new coaching staff’s first time leading the team in the Rockwood Quad.
“It was a good feeling since our coach had never gotten second before and since it was our first time as a team playing in the Rockwood Quad with this coach,” Hall said.
Playing in the tournament for the first time, Bell said it was fun and she feels that her and her teammate did well during the tournament.
“[Placing 2nd] was exciting. I thought me and Madison did pretty good that day,” Bell said.
As a senior, this is Hall’s last year with the team, making this a very sentimental season. She said that she is trying to soak in these last moments with her teammates and coaches.
“I have State in two weeks and after that, [it’s] my last time playing high school golf. It’s just kind of bittersweet, I’m excited, but I also don’t want it to end. Just kind of living in the moment this year,” Hall said.
On the other hand, playing her first year on the team, Bell said that the golf coaches as well the atmosphere was very supportive.
“I feel like it was [a] good [coaching staff] and just a good environment,” Bell said.
