On Feb. 5 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) traveled to St. Louis University to compete in the District Leadership Conference (DLC). Rockwood Summit had a total of 30 students attend the conference and the Rockwood School District made up 27 percent of the students in attendance.
CCE and personal finance teacher Laurie Philipp says preparations for the conference began in August. Students are able to meet in Ac Lab sessions to choose their category.
“We start preparing for the conference in August, all the students meet and they have a bunch of resources. They have sessions of ac-lab to study and sessions before school where they can meet and get themselves ready for the conference.” Philipp said.
Four students qualified for state, senior James Berry, juniors Tracy Vu, Emory Reinen, and Trevi Guest. Vu, Reinen, and Guest all competed in the Social Media strategies category and Berry competed in the advertising category.
Berry says he placed second in the conference and he qualified for state. To prepare for the conference Berry says he bought a suit and studied hard.
“I went out and bought a suit, and I studied vigorously for the test. I studied advertising.” Berry said.
Vu says to prepare for the conference she studied the Sunday before and began the project while her group members were still in Disney.
“I started the project the Sunday before, I looked at the guidelines and figured out what was needed to make our project successful. Then when Trevi and Emory came back on Tuesday we decided to put it on a canvas slideshow.” Vu says.
Vu says that she placed second in the conference and qualified for state.
