On March 5, Summit’s boy’s basketball team competed in the Class 5 District 2 tournament against St. John Vianney High School, losing 50-88. This will be the last game for the 2024-2025 season with a season record of 12-15. There were a lot of good shots and ball-handling; however Vianney was also a tough team to get past.
Even though the team had practiced many times and reviewed the opposing team’s plays, their offense was able to get through. Head coach Wesley Voyles believes that there will be more opportunities ahead to improve for the next season. Vianney’s team had some very good players which came at a disadvantage, including their tactic of bad-mouthing their opposing teams. Luckily however, the coaches had prepared the players for this kind of behavior and sophomore Bradley Wyatt knew to remember this.
“We also knew that they like to talk a lot of trash on the court so our coaches wanted us to try and tune it out as much as possible,” Wyatt said.
There were a few turnovers in the beginning of the game which led to tough defense on our part and also fewer moments where the offense were able to score.
“The other team stayed up the line and in the gaps on defense. On offense they are able to score from anywhere inside half court so being forced to guard a threat at all three levels on the floor is a challenge in itself,” Voyles said.
Although the team didn’t perform at the level they wanted, it was still a good run, especially against a team like Vianney.
“I think we played alright and got a little sped up towards the start of the game which forced a lot of turnovers early, but we picked it up as the game went on,” Wyatt said.
During the offseason, the team will continue to practice and sharpen their skills so they can be ready for the season next winter.
“Going into next year we plan to continue building, continue growing and improving our skill and strength for the following season. We graduate two important seniors but after those two we return 4 starters. I believe with the right focus this can be a great offseason leading us into next year,” Voyles said.
For some of the players, this also means participating in club or travel teams for basketball, keeping them preoccupied and maintaining their abilities.
“During this off season I just want to try and make myself the best player I can while playing AAU basketball and working out,” Wyatt said.
