Summer concert preview

A look into the many concerts happening in Saint Louis this summer.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers

Dave Matthews Band, a rock band formed in 1991, returns to St. Louis at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre this summer. The band has released ten studio albums, along with an abundance of live albums, video albums, and more. Dave Matthews Band consists of seven members, along with 2.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Senior Clayton Burns is excited to experience the fun crowd during the concert.
“I am most looking forward [to] the people and the crowd. I hope it’s similar to the Grateful Dead concert I went to; just people happy, dancing, and having fun,” Burns said.
Many people’s favorite artists are based on their first time hearing them. Burns said that two songs were able to hook him in.
“The song that made me fall in love with them is a tie. The first song is ‘Crash’ and the second song is ‘All Along the Watchtower (Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre),’” Burns said.
The Dave Matthews Band concert will take place on June 14th at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights.

Descendants/Zombies: World’s Collide Tour

A brand new tour

For the first time, two of the most successful Disney Channel franchises are setting off on a tour, hitting places from San Diego to Toronto. Disney’s Descendants debut film was released in 2015, and Zombies debuted in 2018. Both franchises consist of four films (Zombies 4 set to release in the fall of this year), as well as many animated series and short films. After receiving two tickets for Christmas, junior Claire Worley is jazzed about the upcoming concert.

With a total of 79 songs combined, there’s something for everyone in the Descendants and Zombies soundtracks. Worley’s two favorite songs come from the first movies of each.

“My favorite song from Descendants would have to be ‘Did I Mention,’ but my favorite song from Zombies…I think it’s gotta be ‘BAMM,’” Worley said.

Planning what to wear to a concert can be one of the most exciting things about the whole experience. A fan of shiny pants, Worley plans to wear an extravagant outfit.

“[I will be] wearing my sparkly pink pants and my shiny boots. I am also crafting a shirt to wear with my pink pants,” Worley said.

The Descendants x Zombies: Worlds Collide Tour will take place on Aug. 2 at Enterprise Center.

Folk artist returns

Indie folk artist Gregory Alan Isakov returns to St. Louis this August during his 2025 summer tour. Isakov, a South African-born American who currently runs Starling Farm in Boulder, Colorado, released his first studio album in 2003. Since then, he has released six more albums with a total of 91 songs.
This time, Isakov will be playing at The Pageant, a smaller venue compared to larger ones in St. Louis like Chaifetz Arena and The Factory. Science teacher Michael Sebourn said he enjoys a smaller space to feel more connection with the artist.
“[I like that] it’s a small venue this time. It’s like 2,000 people, so it [will] be really small and [the people] can be close,” Sebourn said.
An artist’s most popular songs are normally what draws listeners in. This is the case with sophomore Elizabeth Davis, who said that she enjoys one of Isakov’s fan favorites.
“The first song of his that I really fell in love with was ‘Big Black Car,’ because my sister, who I'm going to the concert with, absolutely loves that song and she showed it to me. Once I heard that song, I immediately loved him and wanted to hear more of his music,” Davis said.
Gregory Alan Isakov will play at The Pageant on Aug. 27 later this year.

Kendrick Lamar and SZA

An exciting duo

After a memorable Super Bowl Halftime performance, Kendrick Lamar shot to stardom. Lamar’s “Not Like Us” went on to win all five Grammy categories it was nominated for, including Record of the Year. After their collaboration on seven songs, Lamar is set to tour with St. Louis native SZA this summer, sophomore Logan Holtgrewe plans to attend.

Kendrick Lamar has a total of 73 songs, around half as a featured artist and the rest as lead artist. Holtgrewe is looking forward to hearing the songs with both Lamar and SZA on them.

“[I would most want to hear] ‘Luther’ because it’s got both [Kendrick Lamar and SZA] and it’s pretty good. [I’d want them to play] ‘All the Stars,’ because that's kind of an oldie,” Holtgrewe said.

With so many big names coming to perform every year, few artists have yet to grace the St. Louis stage. Holtgrewe hopes a certain big rapper will make his way soon.

“[I would want] Chief Keef [to come to St. Louis]. I listen to all his albums, and I think it would be very fun,” Holtgrewe said.

Kendrick Lamar and SZA will perform on June 4 at The Dome at America’s Center.
