Holes in Field Hockey Field cause injury

As the 2025 field hockey season begins, the field causes difficulties for the team. The field has always been dry and patchy, but over the summer it has become increasingly worse as many holes have appeared in the grass. Field hockey coach Andrew Neil says that due to the state of the field hockey field, his team tries to get onto turf as much as possible.

“If it becomes an issue, we try to get onto turf as much as we can because we want to avoid the grass fields since the divots make it more dangerous to play on,” Neil said.

Junior Hannah Goellner injured herself due to the unsafe conditions of the field.

“We were doing a drill where it was three [against] two, and after my turn during the drill I was running back into the line and as I was running I wasn’t paying attention and my foot went in a hole. I rolled my ankle and heard it pop,” Goellner said.

Goellner is not the only player that has injured themselves due to the field, although she is the only one that had to miss games because of the injury.

The team has been adapting by putting cones over the holes and the girls will warn each other when there is a hole nearby. However it makes practice harder because they have to be more cautious and their attention is divided.

Activities Director Dustin Hays said that the holes in the field have been an issue all summer, and nobody is sure how they occurred.

“The field hockey field has holes that have developed over the summer. We aren’t quite sure what is causing [the] problem,” Hays said.

Hays has been trying to stay on top of the problem and he purchased bags of soil for the team so they would be able to fill in the holes as they find them.
