- In 1917, the United States bought the Caribbean Islands, now the U.S. Virgin Islands, from Denmark in a deal to allow Denmark to retain their control over Greenland. In the deal, the U.S. agreed to not annex Greenland.
- Legal experts say the deal made in 1917 is still binding, confirming Denmark’s control over Greenland. President Trump has stated in a press conference with the World Economic Forum on January 21 that he does not want to use violence to acquire Greenland, but that he is willing to break the previous agreement.
- Canada and France both opened consulates in Greenland on Feb. 6, 2026 in order to show support for their fellow North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member, Denmark.
- Newly appointed French Consul General, Jean-Noel Poirier, told CNN that the opening of the consulate was not a warning to the U.S., but rather a sign of friendship toward Denmark.
- According to a poll from The Guardian, support for President Trump in Western European countries has greatly declined since his statement about Greenland was released. CNN states that the US government’s recent statements have caused European countries to send additional troops to the arctic island to support Greenland.
