After a successful season with a final record of 21-8-2, the varsity hockey team was defeated by the Priory Ravens on Feb. 26 at Centene Community Ice Center. The final score was 8-4, with goals by senior Wyatt Schneider, sophomore Corbin Green, and sophomore Conor Stark (2).
The game started off on a great foot, the first goal being scored around seven minutes into the first period by Schneider. Schneider said he was happy to give the team the lead and get the game going.
“[Scoring the first goal] felt pretty good. It felt good to get off on the right step, and [I’m] happy we could get the 1-0 lead, but at the end of the day it wasn’t enough,” Schneider said.
After losing three seniors, the team was looking at a year to work on their skills and reform for next season. Despite this, the falcons prevailed, ending up doing really well. The team was determined all year, eager to prove everyone wrong, junior Blake Warren, an assistant captain, said.
“I’m very proud of all of our guys. Nobody expected us to do good this year. Everybody thought this was a ‘rebuild year’ for us, because we made it to the [Wickenheiser Cup] last year. [We] lost a bunch of people, only out of a senior class of three, so I’m very proud of how everybody just bought in and just said ‘F- what everybody thinks, let’s just do it.’ And we exceeded everybody’s expectations, so I’m proud of everybody. I’m proud of the season,” Warren said.
With four seniors graduating, Rockwood Summit hockey is looking at a very different team next year. Sophomore Corbin Green and his sister, senior Lorelei Green, have played together for the past two years. With Lorelei graduating, Corbin said he has enjoyed being on the same team with her for the last two years, also looking ahead to next year.
“[Playing with my sister has] been really fun. I love all the memories of just [being] with her. We should have a good team next year, so we’ll see if we can come back,” Corbin said.
Lorelei agrees, explaining how she also got to play with their older brother, yet never getting the chance to secure the gold in the championship.
“[Playing with my brothers has] been fun. I’ve [gotten] to play with both of them, so it’s nice but it sucks we never got [to win the Wickenheiser Cup] with each other,” Lorelei said.
The Falcons fought hard all game, trying to lessen the goal deficit for their team, but Priory topped them throughout. Warren explained how unfortunate the loss was, considering Summit went undefeated throughout most of the playoffs.
“I could ramble on [about the loss], but it just wasn’t our game. We’ve been hot all playoffs and today just wasn’t our day,” Warren said.
Although it was tough to lose this year, as well as last year, Lorelei said that one game is not the whole story for Summit hockey.
“It’s not what you wanted. It sucks more that it’s two years in a row. But at the end of the day, it’s just one game and it doesn’t define us,” Lorelei said.
