The Falcon Players’ production of The Children’s Hour took place on Nov. 13, 14, and 15. The play, written by Lillian Hellman, focuses on two female teachers at a girls boarding school whose lives get destroyed when a bitter student spreads a rumor that they are lovers. The plot, based on a real 19th-century case of two schoolmistresses in Scotland who were accused of a romantic relationship by a student, deals with heavy themes of societal judgment, prejudices, and the destructive capacity of lies.
Senior Piper Covert starred as Karen Wright, one of the accused headmistresses at the school. Covert said that the biggest highlight audience members should receive from this story is that words hold more power than people might think.
“The biggest takeaway I can say was definitely just knowing the impact our words can have on people in ways that we never could’ve imagined. I think with this story it’s shown beautifully just how far things can go and the consequences of our choice of words,” Covert said.
