While many band, orchestra, and choir students focus on playing pieces of music, senior percussion student Justin Tang composed his own piece entitled “Epilogue.” The piece was composed for the percussion concert, set to take place on April 14.
This is Tang’s first time composing a piece of music, which he said caused some doubt about the quality of the music.
“Initially I thought it was bad, but my friends all thought it was some musical masterpiece, so they convinced me to ask our percussion director to let us perform it,” Tang said.
When he started composing the piece, Tang explained that he was not very serious about it, but as time went on he started to like how it sounded, so he took more time to improve it, and eventually the idea for the piece took more shape.
“As I kept writing, the feeling I got from the song evolved into a reminiscent emotion, hence the name of the song. It kind of represents the end of this part of our lives, and the start of the next,” Tang said.
In the future, Tang hopes to continue to pursue music at New York University, where his sister also attends.
