The girls swim team held their senior night celebrations on Jan. 27 during their last home meet. The team lost 133-51 in the meet against the Parkway Central Colts.
Head Coach Lucas Benson said that although the team didn’t win the meet, it’s more important that they enjoyed their senior night.
“It was a really tough meet. Parkway Central is one of the best teams in the state, so our goal at this meet was just to have fun and really honor our seniors,” Benson said.
As the team’s last meets approach, senior Breanna Wilkinson said that they’re working on small technique changes in order to improve their times.
“Going into conference and state, we’re working on the little things in each race, like starts and turns and making sure that those are all great. So that way, like the actual swimming goes well,” Wilkinson said.
With 13 seniors leaving the team next year, senior Clara Budge said that she and the rest of the seniors want to get more underclassmen excited about swimming.
“We’re just trying to get everyone really excited and make connections with the underclassmen, so that it makes them want to keep swimming and encourage other people to join swim,” Budge said.
Additionally, Benson said that the seniors act as a great example to underclassmen and have built a strong team dynamic.
“What our seniors are doing this year is helping set the tone, the expectation, the culture of our team, making sure that, you know, we’re working hard at practice, that the expectation is that we show up, that we participate, we give it our all, and that we try to maintain a positive attitude through it,” Benson said.
