Step 1: Brainstorming
As a team, the Talon staff comes together and decides relevant topics to report on, as well as design elements the next edition should include. Material is categorized into different sections of the paper: soapbox, news, features, sports, arts & entertainment, and advertisements.
Step 2: Design
In 2023, the Talon evolved into a newsmagazine, requiring more incorporation of visual aspects than the traditional tabloids. At the beginning of the year, a different theme is decided for all four editions of the Talon. From there, templates are experimented with on Adobe InDesign.
Step 3: Content
This is what makes the Talon a newsmagazine. Content in the Talon includes a variety of topics, whether that be sports here at Summit or news worldwide. All members of the Talon staff are given relevant topics or events to cover. Depending on the material, reporting requires in-depth research, conducting interviews with relevant individuals both in or outside of Summit, designing graphics, photographing events, and more.
Step 4: Implementing/Formatting
Once individual stories are reviewed by the editors, content is integrated into pages of the newspaper using Adobe InDesign.
Step 5: Revisions/Editing
In the last few weeks before distribution day, every member of the Talon reads the entire magazine from start to finish. Reporters are responsible for fact checking information, catching errors, cleaning up visual alignment, and ensuring high quality printing.
Step 6: Printing
The final design of the Talon is sent off to the Missourian, where each page is crafted into a complete edition.
Step 7: Distribution
The newest edition of the Talon is handed out to the Summit community once a quarter, keeping students updated and informed.
