With the emergence of social media and streaming services, people can discover new music in an increasing number of ways. It’s because of this that the resurgence of old music from decades such as the ‘90s is possible.
Junior Logan Holtgrewe said that he loves grunge music, a genre that emerged and made great cultural impact in the ‘90s.
“[My favorite genre of ‘90s music is] probably grunge. I’m a big fan of Stone Temple Pilots [and] Alice in Chains. [I] definitely [recommend] any [song from] MTV Unplugged, they’re all just amazing,” Holtgrewe said.
Senior Mia Schweigert said that she has used Spotify’s personalized playlists to discover music that she likes from the ‘90s.
“I really like Neutral Milk Hotel, though they’re my favorite ‘90s band. I think one of their songs was on a random playlist made by Spotify, and I liked it, and then I started listening to their other music,” Schweigert said.
Junior Adrianna Palazzola said that social media apps like TikTok have played a big part in the popularization of older music.
“I think [90s music] has definitely been on the rise. [TikTok] is genuinely one of the [best] media sharing apps and it’s definitely more popular than it has been in previous years,” Palazzola said.
